What is a Proxy Server

Introduction Proxy Server

Communication between two computers (shown in red) via a third computer (shown in red) acting as a proxy server.  Jhon does not know who the information is going to, which is why he can use a proxy to protect his privacy.

In computer networking, a proxy server is a client application or appliance that acts as an intermediary for client requests that seek resources from those resources.  When the client requests a service, a proxy server is running on the client's behalf, and the resource server can hide the real origin of the request.

For example, instead of directly connecting to a server that can access a requested resource, such as a file or a web page, the client directs the request to the proxy server, which evaluates the request and performs the required network transactions.  This serves as a way to simplify or control the complexity of the request, providing additional benefits such as privacy or security.  Proxies were developed to add structure and development to distributed systems.
